Naturopathic Doctor - Dr. Gerstmar's Biography

Dr. Tim Gerstmar

Dr. Tim Gerstmar, N.D. Hi there. Thanks for checking me out. If we're going to work together, I figured you should know more about me. So...

Here's my education

It started in kindergarten which was a lot of fun in those days, then elementary school and high school (which wasn't so much fun).

I got my Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from San Diego State University. Yes, philosophy, although my parents weren't real happy about it. Why philosophy? Because I really enjoyed the logic, critical thinking, and deep conversations with my colleagues.

Originally planning to be a philosophy professor and author, things got derailed after my dad's stroke and I returned home to help care for him (if you want to read more of my story, it's here).

After that experience, I decided I wanted to practice medicine and returned to school to do pre-med. I went to Bastyr University here in Seattle where I got a doctorate degree in Naturopathic medicine, and I interned at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health.

Who I like to work with

I specialize in treating complex chronic diseases, those issues that leave most other doctors stumped. Most of the people I see have already seen between 4-10 other doctors before coming to see me.

My area of expertise is in digestive health. People seek me out for natural treatments for digestive problems like: gas, bloating, heartburn and reflux (GERD), constipation, diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Celiac disease.

How I work

I use clinical nutrition (primarily Paleo, Weston A Price and GAPS) & lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine (herbs), functional medicine, homeopathy, and anything else I think would be helpful for you.

Some personal stuff

I'm happily married to the most awesome woman in the world (it's true!). We have a strapping 2 year old son who teaches me something new every day. I live with two dogs (that I don't walk enough) and am owned by two cats. Aside from practicing medicine (which takes up an amazingly large amount of time), I like to spend time with my wife and son. I also Crossfit, read as much as I can (have you seen some of my book reviews on the blog?), and like to get outside when I have the time. You should also know that I'm a big nerd and enjoy many things sci-fi and fantasy (yes I got bullied in high school).

The most important thing about me

I love what I do, and (to toot my own horn) I'm darn good at it, though I'm always working to get better.

I'm blessed to be able to work with people to help them lead better lives. I really feel this is my life's work.

Now that you know more about me, how about you tell me about yourself?
